TORONTO — A Toronto customs broker who evaded $4.7 million in duties and taxes has been sentenced to prison on 16 charges.
John Phillip Topp, of Topp Customs Services Inc., was sentenced to five years on 10 counts and three years on the remaining six counts.
The sentences are to be served concurrently.
The Canada Border Services Agency says between 1999 to 2002, Topp falsified documents submitted on behalf of his clients, claiming little or no money owing.
A customs broker acts as an agent on behalf of clients to clear imported goods with the agency.
