Calgary police chief, union defend actions of officers who shot, killed man

CALGARY – Calgary’s police chief and a spokesman for the police union are defending officers who shot and killed a man at a city apartment building.
Chief Rick Hanson says four officers responded to a call Thursday from a man who said he’d just killed someone.
He says the officers were met at the door of a suite by a man wielding a knife and efforts to subdue him with a Taser were unsuccessful.
Hanson says that gave the officers little choice but to shoot the suspect.
John Dooks, a spokesman with the police union, says he’s confident the officers acted appropriately and that the lethal use of force was necessary in this case.
Officers found a seriously wounded woman in the suite, but she later died.
